Description

On the 77th anniversary of the commemoration of the end of the Second World War in Europe, the traveling exhibition “Liberated! And then?” for two months at the Villa Seligmann.

On May 8, the new beginning and the double liberation from war and National Socialism are commemorated. To mark the occasion, we are opening the documentary exhibition “Liberated! And then?” at Villa Seligmann and invite visitors to view the exhibition until July 13, 2022. The exhibition was conceived by the Bergen-Belsen Memorial in cooperation with students from Leibniz Universität Hannover.

The exhibition sheds light on the uncertain situation of those persecuted by the Nazis after their liberation in the spring of 1945. The focus of “Liberated! And then?” focuses on the different groups of survivors, exemplary lives and the role of the Allies after the end of the war.

The exhibition explores topics such as the self-organization of the liberated and emigration, as well as personal decisions and the various challenges of the post-war period. The focus is always on the fates of the hundreds of thousands of surviving concentration camp prisoners, prisoners of war, forced laborers and prisoners of the Gestapo and the judiciary immediately after liberation.
