How can music preserve humanity when the world is falling apart at the seams?
The song recital “Das Narrenschiff – Lieder zwischen Wahnsinn und Widerstand” explores music as an expression of dignity and inner freedom in times of political persecution.
The focus of the evening is the Dutch-Jewish composer Rosy Wertheim (1888-1949). During the National Socialist occupation, she secretly organized so-called “zwarte avonden” – forbidden song recitals in which her own compositions were also performed. This music became a place of spiritual resistance and self-assertion against exclusion and violence.
The program is complemented by compositions by the Dutch swing duo Johnny & Jones, Max Kowalski and his own arrangements of well-known Jewish melodies, which reflect different facets of Jewish musical experience between irony, memory and existential depth.
The duo haqolot combines these works into a concentrated song recital that poses a timeless question: How can music remain an expression of human dignity even under the most adverse conditions?
