The music of Dawid Eisenstadt from the Great Synagogue in Warsaw

Description

Warsaw artists – the vocal ensemble Match Match Ensemble, conductor Lilianna Krych, tenor Wojciech Parchem and organist Jakub Stefek – have collected the sheet music of David Eisenstadt, the most famous musician and choirmaster of the synagogue in Tłomackie Street, from archives in New York, Paris, Berlin and Jerusalem. Between 1921 and 1942, he composed works for liturgical use that were widely used in the repertoires of many choirs and later became famous as outstanding examples of this style of music. Some of these pieces, a resurrected legacy reconstructed from handwritten manuscripts, can now be heard for the first time in many decades.

The Great Synagogue in Tłomackie Street was not only a place of prayer, but also a lively cultural center. In addition to the excellent choir, the most famous cantors in Europe sang there. Concerts and festive events were organized, and pre-war travel guides described the synagogue as an indispensable item on the agenda of every city tour.

David Eisenstadt and his family were murdered in 1942, and the Great Synagogue was blown up on May 16, 1943 – a symbolic act of the crushing of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising and the destruction of the Jewish quarter. Standing in front of the Blue Tower today, it is hard to believe that any of it has survived. And yet the eclectic music of the liturgical poem “Lecha Dodi” resounds again, the virtuoso recitatives of the cantor return, as do the cheerful sounds of Hasidic songs.
