The Day of Remembrance of the Victims of National Socialism is an occasion to remember human destinies during the darkest period of our history. The Parliament of Lower Saxony and the Villa Seligmann cordially invite you to the memorial concert in the Marktkirche. Many composers were subjected to persecution and disenfranchisement during the National Socialist era. Jewish artists were forced into exile or imprisoned and murdered. In addition, their art was used with immeasurable cynicism to conceal and trivialize the reality of German concentration camps.
The concert evening will be performed by the Modern Times Quartet and actress Charlotta Bjelvenstam. It is dedicated to the compositions of Jewish artists who suffered persecution in various ways. Ruth Schonthal fled as a teenager and later sought to create a musical memorial to the Holocaust. Viktor Ullmann composed around half of his works in Theresienstadt and used his art to counteract the impending death. Szymon Laks survived Auschwitz-Birkenau through his music before continuing his life for music.
