What is more sensual than smooth chocolate and what is more soulful than piano music? When these two worlds meet, the result is an evening that seduces the senses.
Hamburg chocolatier Oliver Rohlf, founder of the chocolaterie “Schokovida”, meets pianist Georg Thoma, known for his masterful and sensitive improvisations.
Together, Thoma and Rohlf combine listening and tasting and are inspired by the sensory allegories of the same name in the large hall of Villa Seligmann. While chocolate melts into harmonizing musical movements, piano improvisations envelop the “dark gold”. The audience tastes Rohlf’s exquisite chocolate creations, while Thoma takes up the palate experiences and spontaneously translates them into music. Each chocolate inspires a new improvisation – sometimes delicate, sometimes powerful, and always surprisingly complex.

Artists

Georg Thoma is a pianist, piano improviser and music theorist. His improvisations range in style from baroque, classical, romantic and impressionistic to new music, jazz and pop. In his concerts, he creates live character pieces, suites, sonata movements and free forms from audience requests and musical impulses – combining a profound knowledge of historical style with tonal imagination and formal clarity. He studied piano, music theory and improvisation in Salzburg, Munich and Stuttgart. He currently teaches music theory, ear training and improvisation at the music academies in Freiburg, Munich and Stuttgart and is working on his doctorate in historical improvisation practices; he previously worked at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg.

Oliver Rohlf has been on the road with “Schokovida” since 2004. Based in Hamburg, everything revolves around the “dark gold”. Be it basic cocoa varieties, their cultivation and skillful processing into successful chocolate. Schokovida’s store and production facilities are located in Hamburg Eppendorf. Here, a small team produces lots of chocolate bars, drinking chocolates and truffles… day after day, completely by hand and without a double bottom.

About improvisation

Musical improvisation is demonstrably a basic component of historical performance practice and a primary source of music creation. It exists in all styles and musical genres. As a philosophy of life, it stands for freedom of expression and form with instinctive, sensual and also intellectual approaches. In contrast to the musical interpretation of already composed works, improvisation is interactive and spontaneous: it enters into a creative exchange with the listener and opens up hitherto little-explored and little-known paths of communication. Beyond musical abstraction, the ability to improvise is a craft that combines special skills and characteristics.

With these guiding principles in mind, Villa Seligmann invites those interested in culture, creative people and curious concertgoers to have a lively experience of improvisation and to play an active role in shaping it. The concert series is an open space for creativity in which the boundaries between performers and listeners are conceptually and spatially dissolved. As a source of inspiration, the series is aimed at all people who are looking for inspiration and new ways of interacting and who want to gain an insight into the world of unlimited musical possibilities.
