This evening is dedicated to three ostracized composers with their very own view of the themes of persecution, expulsion and farewell.

The selected songs by Hanns Eisler and Kurt Weill and the farewell songs by Erich Wolfgang Korngold echo the horror of the collapse of a world that was thought to be stable. At the same time, the question of the “What now?” of life always resonates, the strength of which always wants to carry on despite everything: In the moments of greatest powerlessness and vulnerability, the will to live and the joy of life become immediately tangible.

The composers confront the horror of their time with black humor, light muse and loving melancholy. In this way, the contrasting works complement each other to create an emotional tableau of the dramatic events that determined their creation. At the same time, in their unconditional humanity, which wants to show itself in all its facets, they point beyond their time and seem all the more relevant today.
