The Pianist – Szpilman in Memoriam

On the 23rd anniversary of the death of the pianist and survivor of the Warsaw ghetto Władysław Szpilman (05.12.1911 – 06.07 2000), the young Polish pianist Marek Bracha pays tribute to his life with a musical portrait. The program includes works by Fryderyk Chopin, Ignaz Friedman, Alexander Tansman, Mieczyslaw Weinberg and, of course, Szpilman’s own compositions.

Władysław Szpilman is the author of hundreds of popular songs, works for solo piano and orchestra, pianist and chamber musician. He survived the Second World War and was immortalized in Roman Polanski’s Oscar-winning film “The Pianist”.

Together with Bracha, the composer and music producer Andrzej Szpilman, who is also Szpilman’s son, will read from his father’s memoirs.

For health reasons, Andrzej Szpilman will not be able to take part in the event at short notice. Selected texts will be read by Daniela Finkelstein.

Marek Bracha is a versatile Polish pianist who trained in Warsaw and London. As a concert pianist and chamber musician, he plays on both modern and historical instruments. His artistic focus includes in particular the promotion of Polish music and culture as well as the Polish-Jewish piano repertoire. He is co-founder and co-curator of the WarszeMuzik chamber music festival, which takes place every year in August in the district of the former Warsaw ghetto. Marek Bracha is best known to Hanover audiences for his performances with the Chopin Society Hanover.

In the “Young Master Interpreters” series, the Villa Seligmann presents young artists who are about to make a name for themselves on the German and international stages. In the House of Jewish Music, the young masters present specially curated programs in which the origins, connections and interactions of Jewish musical culture are expressed.
