For ten years, from 1925 to 1935, senior cantor Israel Alter shaped the services in the Hanover synagogue with the “outstanding gifts of his voice and his spirit”. From today’s perspective, Alter is considered a legendary personality in the world of synagogue singing. However, Alter’s performances outside the synagogue, his participation in concerts, anniversaries and funerals, also gave Jewish life a strong impetus. A musical search for traces with the North German Synagogal Choir under the direction of Martin Lüssenhop. The historian Dr. Peter Schulze reports on Israel Alter, the “cantor of cantors”.
