Concentration camp survivor
Exhibition in cooperation with the Landesmuseum Hannover
Portraits of concentration camp survivors, photography by Stefan Hanke
Description
As contemporary witnesses of Nazi crimes, the survivors of the concentration and extermination camps with their different biographies are the focus of the exhibition “KZ überlebt” by Regensburg photographer Stefan Hanke. Villa Seligmann presents 18 impressive black and white portraits in cooperation with the Landesmuseum Hannover. The exhibition invites viewers to a lasting encounter with extraordinary people. The Landesmuseum Hannover is showing over 50 more portraits. The part of the exhibition on display at Villa Seligmann focuses on Jewish survivors, many of whom were active in the arts and culture. Without a preconceived victim template, Hanke portrays people from all groups of persecuted people from a total of seven countries who can still be reached. The expressive photographs show the protagonists in their respective living environments or at the sites of their persecution and imprisonment. Surprising statements in the form of quotes and unexpected historical references give the personal paths of life and suffering their own face. They provide special access to the story or stories surrounding one of humanity’s greatest catastrophes.
The exhibition “KZ überlebt” will be on display at Villa Seligmann every Monday and Wednesday between 10 am and 6 pm. Please refer to our website for short-term changes, e.g. on public holidays.
