As part of the research project
German Jewish Sacred Musical Intersections
of the
European Center for Jewish Music
and the Jewish Music Research Center at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem with the support of the German-Israeli Foundation for Scientific Research and Development (GIF), a concert on German-Jewish (Ashkenazi) synagogal music from the early 19th century to the Second World War will be held at Villa Seligmann.
In his introductory lecture (at 6 pm), the internationally renowned expert on Jewish music Prof. Edwin Seroussi will shed light on the history of the origins of Ashkenazi synagogal music. The subsequent concert program (from 7 pm) is based on the wealth of unknown musical sources examined in the research project (including handwritten scores, archive recordings and the private estates of composers, cantors and choirmasters).
The concert and the introduction provide exciting insights into the world of German-Jewish liturgical music. Contrary to the stereotypical ideas of “German Jewry”, this music was never just a cultural product of “Germany”. Rather, the Jewish ritual music of the time was a pan-European phenomenon. It represents a new aesthetic ideal whose breeding ground was the cross-cultural overlap between Jews and the surrounding Christian society.
