World War I also brought a peaceful \u201cvirus\u201d to Europe: a \u201cmusical\u201d one. Kurt Weill: \u201cJazz appeared, in the midst of a period of heightened artistry, as a piece of nature, as the healthiest, most powerful form of artistic expression \u2026\u201d The leading figures of the avant-garde were electrified. <\/p>\n

Igor Stravinsky has sheet music sent to him from New York. He composes a ragtime and *The Soldier\u2019s Tale*. Erwin Schulhoff dances ecstatically all night long to the music of jazz combos and declares: \u201cI was the first in Europe to create art jazz, before Ravel, Hindemith, and Krenek.\u201d <\/p>\n

Shimmies, ragtime, and the blues make their way into operas, symphonies, and chamber music. In Vienna, Wilhelm Grosz and Ernst Krenek create a sensation\u2014often met with hostility\u2014with a blend of their own compositions and jazz. In Berlin, Stefan Wolpe becomes the enfant terrible with his pounding rhythms, while George Antheil is dubbed the \u201cbad boy of music.\u201d Darius Milhaud, Artur Arthur Honegger, and Alexandre Tansman become heroes of France\u2019s New Music movement thanks to their incorporation of jazz elements. <\/p>\n

Barely more than a decade later, the Nazi regime banned their music. Jazz was deemed \u201cdegenerate.\u201d Many of the \u201cjazz musicians\u201d fled Europe or were murdered. <\/p>\n

This concert is a tribute to the leading figures of a unique era of innovation. They were inspired and motivated. Their fascination is ours. <\/p>\n

The event is based on ideas and research by Benno Ure and Hartmut Krones and is being organized in collaboration with Universal Edition Vienna.<\/em>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column]

Johannes Fleischmann<\/span><\/strong><\/a><\/h6>\n

Born into a musical family in Vienna, Johannes Fleischmann impresses both nationally and internationally as “The Viennese Violinist” with an impressive repertoire. This diversity and his passion for chamber music is reflected in his ongoing collaborations with renowned musicians. His solo debut at the Wiener Konzerthaus was followed by numerous international tours and his appointment as a cultural ambassador by the Austrian Foreign Ministry. Johannes Fleischmann teaches at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna as assistant to Elisabeth Kropfitsch and is the founder and artistic director of the Palais Coburg Matinee and the “Althofener Meisterklassen” in Carinthia. <\/p>\n

Phillip Scheucher<\/strong> <\/a><\/p>\n

Born in Graz, he received piano instruction from Makus Schirmer, Ilja Scheps, and Markus Becker, as well as at the Royal College of Music in London. He was awarded the Beethoven-Haus Prize in Bonn and second prize at the International Beethoven Piano Competition in Vienna. He has achieved top placements in other competitions in Germany, Italy, South Africa, Denmark, and Spain. A particular focus of his work is contemporary music. He performs regularly in Europe, Asia, and the U.S. with the ensemble SYMPHONIACS. His most recent releases include a multi-award-winning duo album with violinist Cosima Soulez Larivi\u00e8re. Philipp Scheucher teaches piano at the Johann-Joseph-Fux Conservatory and lectures at the Anton Bruckner Private University. He is a B\u00f6sendorfer Artist. <\/p>\n

Benno Ure<\/strong><\/a><\/span><\/h6>\n

For many years, Benno Ure has been collecting forgotten sheet music, writing texts and presenting chamber music events. As co-author, he wrote the book “Tasten, T\u00f6ne und Tumulte”, which was enthusiastically received by critics and became a bestseller. Together with violinist Marietta Kratz from the Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, he founded the “Forgotten Notes Project”, in which numerous musicians have been involved for more than ten years with more than 20 programs. Benno Ure was Professor of Pediatric Surgery at Hannover Medical School until 2023. <\/p>\n

Hartmut Krones <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Born in Vienna in 1944, he studied music education, German language and literature, voice, vocal pedagogy, and musicology. He has been teaching at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna since 1970 and directed the \u201cInstitute for Musical Style Research\u201d from 2002 to 2013, which included the departments of \u201cStylistics and Performance Practice\u201d and the \u201cArnold Sch\u00f6nberg Research Center.\u201d His publications cover the areas of performance practice in early and contemporary music, musical symbolism and rhetoric, as well as 20th-century music and music history (including music in exile). <\/p>\n <\/div>\r\n <\/div>\r\n <\/div>\r\n <\/div>\r\n <\/div>\r\n [\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column]
