The blowing of the shofar is one of the most important rituals of the Jewish High Holidays, which begin this year on September 22. The ritual horn shofar is not only mentioned 72 times (more often than any other musical instrument) in the Hebrew Bible, it also appears several times in the New Testament in connection with messianic and apocalyptic ideas – the sound of the shofar is also an expression of direct divine intervention in earthly events in Christianity. <\/p>\n

The concert program presents compositions that either come directly from or are inspired by the Jewish spiritual tradition of Rosh HaShanah (New Year) and Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement), including the famous Kol nidre by the German Protestant composer Max Bruch in the version for shofar and piano.<\/p>\n

Bar Zemach has already made a name for himself internationally not only as a horn soloist, but also for his unique ability to play melodies on the sacred Jewish musical instrument. The renowned pianist and professor for the history of Jewish music in Weimar and Potsdam, Jascha Nemtsov, will take over the piano part and also lead through the program with lively commentary. <\/p>\n

The young Israeli horn and shofar soloist Bar Zemach<\/strong> is principal horn of the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra<\/em>under Daniel Barenboim and frequently plays chamber music and new music with the Boulez Ensemble<\/em>, the Ensemble Modern<\/em> and the Pacific Quintet<\/em>. He is also a member of the Giora Feidman Klezmer Virtuos Quartet<\/em>. Bar Zemach is passionately committed to establishing the shofar as a fully-fledged classical instrument. In 2025, a concerto for shofar and orchestra written especially for him, the first composition of its kind in the world, was premiered at the Berlin Philharmonie. Bar is currently Britten-Pears Young Artist<\/em> for 2024-2025. <\/p>\n

Jascha Nemtsov<\/strong> is a pianist and musicologist, Professor of the History of Jewish Music at the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar and Academic Director of Cantor Training at the University of Potsdam. He studied at the St. Petersburg State Conservatory and has lived in Germany since 1992. His research is dedicated to Jewish music and Jewish composers in the 19th and 20th centuries. His textbook J\u00fcdische Musik – Einf\u00fchrung was published by Nomos Verlag in 2024. Nemtsov performs internationally as a pianist and has recorded more than 40 CDs to date, including numerous premiere recordings of works by rediscovered persecuted composers. In 2007 he received the German Record Critics’ Award and in 2018 the OPUS KLASSIK Award.<\/p>\n <\/div>\r\n <\/div>\r\n <\/div>\r\n
