If you enquire about the “Blue Tower Plaza” in Warsaw, you will be unmistakably drawn to this striking building, whose fa\u00e7ade reflects the sky and the passing clouds. It is located in the heart of the city, surrounded by the hustle and bustle of a central and popular transportation hub. Here you can hear the roar of engines, the honking of car horns, the babble of voices and advertising announcements. You stop for a moment at the exact spot where the Great Synagogue on T\u0142omackie Street – once the most magnificent synagogue in this region of Europe – once stood. It hasn’t been there for 80 years. <\/p>\n

The Great Synagogue in T\u0142omackie Street<\/strong> was completed in 1878 and blown up by the SS at the end of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising on May 16, 1943. It was not only a place of prayer, but also a lively cultural center. In addition to the excellent choir, the most famous cantors in Europe sang there. Concerts and festive events were organized. Pre-war travel guides described the synagogue as an indispensable item on the program of every city tour. <\/p>\n

Polish artists<\/strong>, including the vocal ensemble Match Match, conductor Lilianna Krych, tenor Wojciech Parchem and organist Jakub Stefek, have collected the sheet music of David Eisenstadt<\/strong>, the most famous musician and choirmaster of the synagogue in T\u0142omackie Street, from archives in New York, Paris, Berlin and Jerusalem. Between 1921 and 1942, he composed works for liturgical use that were widely used in the repertoires of many choirs and later became famous as outstanding examples of this style of music. Some of these pieces, reconstructed from handwritten manuscripts, can now be heard again for the first time in many decades. Eisenstadt and his family were murdered in 1942. <\/p>\n
