[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]86 years ago, synagogues were burning in Germany. On the morning of November 10, 1938, a country woke up in a heap of shards of destruction and the smoke of burning. The November pogroms made the increasing disenfranchisement and persecution of Jewish and non-Jewish citizens by the National Socialist regime visible to everyone. Every year, Villa Seligmann commemorates the crimes of that time with a concert reading. This year’s event was conceived by two native Israelis commissioned by Villa Seligmann who live in Germany and give the concepts of pogrom, destruction, pain, grief and hope<\/em> a compellingly contemporary meaning. <\/p>\n

What would we have done if we had been present during the pogrom night of November 9, 1938 – participated? Watched passively? Protest against it? What have we learned since then, and how do we reflect on it for our own time and for our future? <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Pianist and composer Noam Sivan<\/strong> and director Dori Engel<\/strong> link these questions to the memory from the perspective of the “next generation”. The view of youth is revealed above all in the musical improvisations and interpretations of Trio Sivan <\/strong> (piano, violin and cello), which are interwoven in the literary lecture by Hila Meckier<\/strong> and Dori Engel. Texts by Hans Peter Richter (Der Pogrom), Manfred Franke (Mordverl\u00e4ufe), Paul Celan (Die Todesfolge), Primo Levi (Sh’ma), Abraham Sutzkever (Unter Deinen wei\u00dfen Sternen) and the distant voice of the biblical prophet Isaiah will be performed. <\/p>\n

Noam Sivan<\/a><\/strong> is a pianist and composer and a pioneer in the revival of classical improvisation. He plays fugues and four-movement sonatas extemporaneously and conducts orchestral and choral improvisations. He also collaborates with instrumentalists, singers, dancers and actors. His solo album Ambiro’s Journey has been described as a “new milestone in the development of improvisation”. Born in Haifa, Israel in 1978, Noam Sivan was Director of Improvisation at the Curtis Institute and taught at the Juilliard School. Since 2021, he has been a professor at the HMDK Stuttgart, where he leads one of the world’s first master’s programs for piano improvisation. Hila Meckier<\/strong><\/a> studied acting at the Nissan Nativ Acting Studio<\/em> in Tel-Aviv. Her career began as a member of the Dimona Culture Lab Ensemble, a theater group that uses interdisciplinary art forms and with which she has performed on numerous renowned stages in Israel. She has been working in Berlin since 2018. Here she leads a physical theater ensemble under the name “Inka Theater”. She has been a member of the Political Voice Institute<\/em> at the Maxim Gorki Theater<\/em> since 2019. Since 2023, together with other artists, she has created the feminist immersive theater project Parcours der Herzen<\/em>, which is performed in public spaces in rural areas in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Dori Engel<\/a> <\/strong>is an actor and theater director. He was born in Israel and currently lives in Celle. After studying acting at Tel Aviv University and RADA<\/em> in London, he performed in many theaters in Israel as well as in the United Kingdom, France, Canada, Germany, Poland, Romania, Scotland and Cyprus. He has been directing since 2010, both as a freelance writer and producer and at various Israeli theaters. Dori is the founder and artistic director of the International Shakespeare Fringe Festival<\/em>, which took place in 2015, 2016 and 2017 at the Tmu-na Theater<\/em> in Tel Aviv. He currently works as a theater director at the Schlosstheater Celle. <\/p>\n

Maor<\/strong> (piano), Noga<\/strong> (violin) and Zohar Sivan<\/strong> (cello) are young Jewish musicians living in Germany. All three have won first prizes at Jugend Musiziert, the International Karl Adler Competition and the Oskar Rieding Competition as performers, composers and improvisers. The Sivan sibling trio has already performed several times at the Israel Day in Stuttgart’s Schlossplatz and at concerts throughout Israel. <\/p>\n <\/div>\r\n <\/div>\r\n <\/div>\r\n <\/div>\r\n <\/div>\r\n [\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]<\/p>\n
