In 321, Emperor Constantine issued an edict that also obliged Jews to hold office in the city council of Cologne. Today, this is considered the earliest evidence of the existence of Jewish life north of the Alps. In 2021, we therefore celebrated 1700 years of Jewish life<\/strong> in Germany nationwide. <\/span><\/p>\n

The MiQua. LVR Jewish Museum in the Cologne Archaeological Quarter has taken this festive year as an opportunity to trace the traces of Jewish life in Germany with a poster exhibition<\/strong> and to illuminate them in a variety of ways. <\/span><\/p>\n

The exhibition creates opportunities to learn and tell stories<\/strong>, also to counteract prejudices that promote anti-Semitism and distance. 16 roll-ups focus on significant low and high points in 1700 years of German-Jewish history. QR codes<\/strong> are also attached to the roll-ups, which link to various online offers from MiQua. <\/span><\/p>\n

The poster exhibition and its content are an ideal starting point for schools to learn more about the history and present of Jews in Germany<\/strong>. Often based on biographical stories, the perspective is extended to the whole of Germany. The focus is on everyday history; milestones in history and politics are illustrated with their consequences through the stories of specific people. <\/span><\/p>\n

The QR codes in the poster exhibition can be used to take a virtual tour<\/strong> of the more detailed exhibition. This also offers numerous other didactic possibilities. <\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column]

QR codes are attached to the roll-ups of the poster exhibition, which link to various online offers from MiQua: A 360\u00b0 tour makes it possible to experience the larger cube exhibition and offers media content as an ideal complement to the poster exhibition. There are also links to the social media channels (Facebook, Instagram and Twitter) and to the MiQua blog, where various additional material (short tours, interviews, picture galleries, image film) on the traveling exhibition can be found. <\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

The 360\u00b0 tour takes the themes of the poster exhibition and expands them with digital content, videos and interviews. The topics covered are: <\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Justice & injustice <\/b>To this day, Jews experience recurring injustice, are marginalized, persecuted and killed. One example is the plague pogrom of 1349. There were also phases of successful coexistence and the struggle for equal rights, for example in the mid-19th century. Amended constitutions, new rights, the re-restriction of rights, but also the expression of a need for a Jewish state in the form of Zionism are all part of this topic. Under what conditions did Jewish life develop in the countryside? The role played by “homeland” and nation is illustrated by stories of Jewish soldiers who stood up for their fatherland. <\/span><\/p>\n

Life & Coexistence <\/b>The successful coexistence of Jews and Christians over the centuries is the subject of this exhibition. Findings and artefacts from the late medieval Jewish quarter of Cologne provide an insight into everyday life together. The modern era is represented by Abraham von Oppenheim (1804-1878), a banker and patron of the arts, whose family – among many other things – donated windows for Cologne Cathedral. The Protestant cathedral architect Ernst Friedrich Zwirner in turn built the synagogue in Cologne’s Glockengasse on Oppenheim’s behalf. Jewish life today is presented in particular through committed projects by various sponsors. <\/span><\/p>\n

Religion and intellectual history <\/b>Judaism is an ancient religion with a multifaceted, evolving intellectual history. It explains what a synagogue or a mikvah is and what Jewish enlightenment (Haskala) is all about. In addition, fundamental writings and their functions are discussed. <\/span><\/p>\n

Art & Culture <\/b>This section of the exhibition focuses in particular on ritual and cultural areas. Art, music and entertainment culture are highlighted, as well as the founding of associations such as the carnival club “Kleiner K\u00f6lner Klub”. What is Jewish about art and culture – or what is Jewish art anyway? Here you can meet artists, rappers and revelers. <\/span><\/p>\n <\/div>\r\n <\/div>\r\n <\/div>\r\n

The exhibition can be visited as a group or explored individually by the participants. Below we offer you some ideas on how you can guide your group to work independently with the roll-ups. Allow 60 minutes to work with the poster exhibition, although it is advisable to allow 80 minutes for classes that are interested and keen to discuss. Under no circumstances should the final phase be omitted. <\/span><\/p>\n

There are basically two possible variants: <\/span><\/p>\n

Variant 1 <\/b>In this variant, only the poster exhibition is used, without access to the multi-media content. <\/span><\/p>\n

Variant 2 <\/b>The second variant involves a poster exhibition and multimedia content contained in QR codes on the posters.
